Joan E. Hughes, PhD

is an associate professor of instructional technology in the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research examines preservice and inservice teachers’ development of technological knowledge and practice of technology integration in content areas. She currently leads a longitudinal study of 1:1 laptop computing in preservice teacher education and conducts case studies of school technology leadership, teacher knowledge, and technology use among students in and out of school. Dr. Hughes has 17 years of experience in education - as an elementary and middle school teacher and university professor. She worked previously as an assistant and associate professor of Learning Technologies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and earned her Ph.D. (Educational Psychology) at Michigan State University.
